LUXEMBOURG ARMY

Did you know that the current Luxembourgish Army is not even 75 years old? Even though the Luxembourgish Armed Forces were founded at the end of the Second World War, the military history of our tiny country reaches back to the first half of the 19th century. The city of Diekirch being a traditional garrison town with a rich military past, the MNHM museum also sheds light on the evolution of Luxembourg’s own armed forces since the creation of Luxembourg as a state, until present.

A number of large-scale striking dioramas cover key aspects and periods of the Luxembourgish “Volunteer Company” which existed from 1881 to 1944 and the post WWII Luxembourg army. Other sections are dedicated to Luxembourgers fighting in allied armies in both WWI, WWII, and during the Korean War. Luxembourg UN missions are also covered, and special displays provide an overview of daily military life.
