    "A Brief History

    The Model 1916

    The M16 steel german helmet was designed to replace the leather, steel and felt versions of the pickelhaube because of the increasing number of head wounds sustained by the German army.

    Experimental research for the helmet, under the direction of Professor Schwerd of the Technical Institute in Hanover, began in mid- to late 1915 with the creation of various shapes and configurations. While the order i which these versions were produced is unclear, the earliest design sketches and patent drawings establish that the horn-like ventilation lugs, engineered to carry the brow plate, were always an integral part of the design. ...."
