The wars discussed in this book may be divided into three geographical groups: those which from the earliest times to the battle of Lepanto. in 1571, were mostly fought in the Mediterranean lands and south-western Asia, those which from then on to the battle of bordering or dependent upon the Atlantic, and those nwhich since 1815, because of the progress of industry, science, and locomotion, have claimed increasingly the whole world for their stage.
