1. A Mission Begins

Luck plays a part in the life of every man. This is particularly true of the military life. It has certainly been so in my own. Had I not been transferred from the Armored Force-without my consent and rather against my will-and assigned to General Staff duty in February, 1941, it is probable that some one else would be telling the story of "Commando Mission" an that my experiences in the years that followed would have been quite different.
